Support an individual child
Practise listening, explaining and encouraging. Help a child work through a task or join an activity while learning when to guide, when to pause and when to ask your supervising educator.
Be there when a child tries again, understands something new or takes pride in what they’ve made. Build your own skills in learning support, mentoring and child development at Evergreen Leadership Academy.
In our small Kindergarten–Grade 8 community, you can get to know children beyond a single activity. Support their learning, confidence and participation, and build on that understanding alongside our educators.
Practise listening, explaining and encouraging. Help a child work through a task or join an activity while learning when to guide, when to pause and when to ask your supervising educator.
Help prepare and facilitate an activity. Practise giving clear instructions, adapting to different needs and helping children cooperate, participate and learn together.
As you become ready, help design a reading activity, maker challenge or creative workshop. Plan it with an educator, try it with learners and reflect on what you would improve.
Responsibility develops with readiness. Your activities, age group and level of responsibility are agreed with your supervisor and matched to your placement requirements.
A supported beginning Orientation, agreed responsibilities and someone to turn to when you have questions.
Feedback you can use Guidance on your work, opportunities to reflect and practical suggestions for your next steps.
Room to develop Meaningful participation and increasing responsibility as your skills, judgment and confidence grow.
Reliability and follow-through Arrive prepared, communicate promptly and take responsibility for the commitments you make.
Care and sound judgment Respect privacy, follow safety and safeguarding procedures, and ask before acting beyond your agreed role.
Initiative and a willingness to learn Notice where you can contribute, welcome feedback and show that you are putting it into practice.
Evergreen’s Certificate of Excellence recognises students whose work and conduct we can confidently recommend. It requires consistent excellence across every standard—not simply completing the required hours.
All seven standards must be met. Strength in one area does not offset an unmet standard elsewhere. This additional recognition is separate from recording your completed hours and your institution’s placement assessment.
Places are limited. We review each application for the learning experience we can offer, the supervision available and the student’s readiness to contribute.
Complete the shared application. Select Child & Youth Development and tell us about your studies and goals.
We review your interests, availability and program requirements alongside the opportunities we can offer.
Shortlisted applicants are invited to an interview to discuss interests, expectations and fit.
Following selection, confirm institutional approval, supervision and required checks before starting.
We welcome enquiries from students in education, early childhood education, child and youth care or services, educational assistance and related programs, as well as high-school co-op students. Suitability—including required supervisor qualifications—is confirmed with your institution. Dates and hours are arranged individually as part of that approval.
Complete the Evergreen Placement Program Application and select Child & Youth Development. Tell us about your studies, availability and what you hope to learn and contribute.
Apply for a PlacementSubmitting an application does not confirm or reserve a placement. If there is a suitable opportunity, we will contact you about the next steps.
